Alex Randolph
Alex Randolph (May 04, 1922 – April 27, 2004) belonged to the first generation of professional game designers. His exceptional creativity was expressed in over one hundred games, released by small and big companies. Millions of people still play Twixt, Hol's der Geier, Sagaland, Inkognito, Rasende Roboter, Tempo, kleine Schnecke and many other games by Alex Randolph.
Alex Randolph brought people together – not only through his games but also with his great personality. As a game author and as a philosopher, cosmopolitan, designer, writer and, in particular, curious and alert man as well, he always was an explorer on playful and social grounds. He made many – and especially younger – game designers think about his poetic statements on the nature of games, e.g.:
"I've often thought: If I had been an explorer or an anthropologist and had discovered a tribe that had been unknown as yet, my first question would have been, 'What are your games?'. They would certainly have had some."
Alex Randolph was committed to the game designers' interests all his life, and was a co-founder of the Spiele-Autoren-Zunft e.V. (SAZ) in 1991, which awarded him later with the title "Honoray Guild Master".
Through its ALEX media prize, the Game Designer Association wants to cordially express its gratitude to Alex Randolph and enduringly honor this outstanding man.
