ALEX – the media prize
of the SAZ
In the summer of 2004 – just a short period after Alex Randolph's death – the SAZ established the ALEX Media Prize of the Game Designer Association. Once a year, it is decided on by a jury and awarded by the SAZ board.
Current call for submissions: The announcement papers and application forms for the year 2011 can be downloaded here (only in German!): ALEX-Ausschreibung 2011 (PDF-Download 58 KB). Contributions or suggestions for suitable contributions can be submitted by November 15, 2010, to the address of the working group "ALEX Media Prize" as named in the invitation proposal.
Objective: With this prize, the SAZ wants to award works of journalists that give a better understanding to the general public in a convincing way, by describing the experience of playing and the social importance of games.
The focus is primarily on outstanding contributions that illuminate a new or unusual aspect of playing, if possible, or deal with the subject in a special way. The contributions to be awarded must have been published or broadcast in German language during the previous year.
Jury: The working group "ALEX Media Prize" handles the organization of the selection process and the awarding (see Contact). A jury consisting of SAZ members and journalists makes the decision. The decision on the awarding of the ALEX media prize is made by the jury on its own authority; there is no legal recourse.
The prize: The ALEX Media Prize is endowed with prize money of 1,000 Euro overall. It is left to the jury members to decide on the distribution of the amount to the winner or winners. In addition, the winner gets a Topolotoy, a wooden 3D puzzle, designed by Alex Randolph, that was produced exclusively for this award.
Special prizes: The SAZ can award additional ALEX Special Prizes. They can be awarded to institutions, media, editorial staffs etc. that have rendered outstanding services to the public description and conveyance of the cultural assets of games in a special way and over a longer period. All SAZ members can submit proposals for suitable awardees, using the subject "ALEX Special Prize".
